Two You Can Do: Skip the resolutions
It’s that time of year. New year. Do-over. Time to get a fresh start. We’re all brimming with hope, enthusiasm and confidence that this year, things are going to be better. Many of us even set the dreaded New Year’s Resolutions. Let me stop you right there.
Resolutions will kill you. They become weighty reminders of failure about a month in. You likely won’t accomplish anything other than heaping guilt on yourself. So here’s what I suggest: Pick two.
Choose two things you can accomplish, feel good about and with which you can experience progress. Don’t select a giant, insurmountable, mountain of a task. (On the other hand, it should be more challenging than wake up and breath.)
Why two: One to do right away; one to be the next step. There should always be a next step to keep you moving forward.
For the first one, pick something that will make you feel refreshed and energized. Maybe it’s purging unneeded office clutter. Maybe it’s disconnecting from people who are hoping for your failure. Maybe it’s rearranging the office space. Perhaps it is jettisoning that vendor who never follows through and leaves you disappointed. Choose something that clears away distractions and fills you with positive energy.
Once that’s done, you are charged up to take on the next one. You know that onerous project you’ve been meaning to start? Don’t pick that. Instead, think about what needs to happen leading up to it. Break that runway into baby steps. The first step is what you choose to accomplish.
There, now you have two successes under your belt and it’s just the first month of the year. The rest should be gravy—just set realizable goals and break each into doable steps. It will make your New Year brighter!
