Deer in the Social Media Headlights?

Remember those excruciating times from grade school when you had to stand in front of the room to give an oral presentation? Sure, you had your topic down. You had studied, researched and become a subject matter expert. You were ready for that A+, the applause, and you had your humble-but-proud look down cold. Unfortunately, you never got to use it. When you were in front of class, you froze. Yup, cat-got-your-tongue, deer-in-the-headlights, aliens-sucked-out-my-brain froze. Not pretty.

Lots of us freeze when we are in a “look at me” situation. No matter how smart you may be, you want people to look at your product or service, but not at you. It is humbling to have the spotlight right up in your business. And, that’s what social media may seem like—turning the spotlight on yourself.

Social media is a not so new, shiny tool in the branding toolbox, but probably one that you are not using as well as you might. Social media helps to position you as an expert. It keeps you top-of-mind with your clients. It highlights the value you bring.

Think of it as a conversation. Imagine yourself talking to your customer in a comfortable situation. You are sharing information to give them a better experience. You are providing helpful tips. You are providing insight. You are building community with other users.

All good. But, here’s where it gets tricky: What do you post? Depending on your type of business, you select what brings value to your customer. This is not sales; it is relationship building. To get you thinking, here’s a brain dump of some ideas.

The key is to set up a regular schedule so you develop the routine of posting something short, sweet and useful at minimum every week. Work up to once a day. Soon, it will feel natural, like, “Hey, Jane, did you see this article on …” No more deer in the headlights.
