Giving Thanks: The Gift of Gratitude
[A little break from building your brand…]
It’s a holiday week and the official kick-off of the Holiday Season. That’s right, all that hustle-bustle to get the house in order, elbow your way through crowded grocery aisles, plan menus that accommodate the food predilections and dietary restrictions of more guests than your house can comfortably accommodate. You light votive candles to the appliance and plumbing gods to curry favor for unfailing service. And, you put in the extra hours at work, so you can take the days off without a mountain of backlog.
Or conversely, you may be a contestant in the busiest-travel-time-of-the-year game, battling snow, sleet, dicey highways, screwed up reservations, overcrowded terminals, tiny airplane seats, which afford more intimacy with a stranger than you had during the hormonal highs of high school dating, to arrive exhausted, cranky and germ-infested so you may celebrate joy and express gratitude.
Ah, the things we do for love. But giving thanks doesn’t need to be a big blowout once a year or once a week in a formalized religious service. The attitude of gratitude can be with us every minute.
Experiencing gratitude is a gift not only to the recipient but also to ourselves. It feels good to thank those who have done something nice, gone the extra mile or been helpful.
So, don’t deprive yourself or others of the gift of gratitude. It’s an opportunity to focus on what’s right in a wrong situation, to be thankful for what didn’t happen. It’s a chance to see the lesson in any negative situation. It’s a gift of experiencing the real magic of the season: the positive effect you bring to your world with a little gratitude. Now, pass the potatoes, please…
